A Russian spy satellite may be used to track down an American.

The Russian satellite, known as Kosmos 2558, was rumored to be an inspector before it lifted off on Monday. The rumors are likely to continue.

USA 326, an American spy satellite that was launched into the same plane as Kosmos 2558, was in the air for about a month. The two satellites are close to each other and are scheduled to have a close encounter soon, if neither performs any significant maneuvers over the next few days.

Satellite photos and designs are classified.

Kosmos 2558 will make a close approach to the US on August 4. Almost all of the approach distance is in the air.

USA 326 seems to be quite interesting. Jonathan McDowell is an astronomer and satellite tracker who is based at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

If Kosmos 2558 were a spysat stalker, it wouldn't be a big deal. Two Russian satellites maneuvered within 100 miles of the United States' USA 245 satellite in the early 2020s.

American officials were not happy with that inspection.

John "Jay" Raymond, chief of space operations for the U.S Space Force, told Time magazine that they viewed this behavior as unusual and disturbing. There is a chance that it could create a dangerous situation in space.

Does Kosmos 2558 have the same tricks? Langbroek wrote that it will be interesting to follow both satellites.
