Bush narrowly won the Democratic primary in 2020 to become the first Bush to serve in congress. The 1st District had been represented by Clay and his father. Bush is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, and after being sworn in to Congress immediately aligned herself with the "Squad," a small group of Democratic representatives who are considered to be the most far- left members of the House. She supports progressive policies like Medicare for All, the cancelation of student debt and a national minimum wage. Roberts said he wanted to be a normal Democrat who supported the agenda of President Joe Biden.
