Even though he had refused to get the vaccine while playing for the last-place Kansas City Royals, he said last month that he might be willing to get it if it meant playing for a team in contention.
Now is the time for him to make that decision.
The Royals traded Merrifield to the BlueJays just minutes before the deadline. If Merrifield wants to play in Canada later in the season, he will have to get one of the approved vaccines.
"We'll let him work through that with his family, and we don't have anything else to say about it," the general manager said. We felt like we made a better team.
Merrifield was one of 10 players on the Royals who were notvaccinated. Merrifield drew the ire of Kansas City fans when he said something like "Maybe that changes" when asked about his decision.
Merrifield wouldn't get vaccine for his current team, but would for someone else.
The Royals general manager J.J. Picollo said that the vaccine status of the player did not affect the team. I'm not going to say much about the conversations we had with Toronto. I don't need to discuss a player on another team.
The Royals received speedster Samad Taylor and right-handed pitcher Max Castillo in exchange for them. Taylor is hitting.258 with nine homers and 23 stolen bases in 70 games for Triple-A Buffalo while Castillo has a 3.05 earned run average in nine appearances for Toronto
The young core of the Royals will have more chances to play together.
Merrifield had 30 extra- base hits and 15 stolen bases this season. His 553-game Iron Man streak ended last month because of a toe injury, but he has proved to be reliable and has led the league in hits twice.
Merrifield is making $7 million this season and is due $2.75 million next season along with a $4 million bonus if he spends less than 120 days on the injured list. He has a mutual option to purchase 18 million shares of common stock.
I like him I enjoy watching him play. "I like him as a person and I'm looking forward to the game." I also know that it's not a big deal. A long time ago, this conversation began.
George Springer was not in the lineup for the third time in the past four games, due to a right elbow injury, as the Blueshirts won their fourth game in a row.
Springer will be re-examined on Wednesday, according to John Schneider.
"He's going to do some things on the field today, but it's not something concrete right now," Schneider said. We're hopeful that everything goes well because you want him to be good and help us. We hope it isn't crazy where it will affect him and his performance.
Left-handed pitcher Anthony Bass, right-handed pitcherMitch White, infielder Alex DeJesus, and a player to be named later from Miami were traded by the BlueJays to the Dodgers for right-handed pitcher Nick Frasso.
Bass and Pop are both 2-0 with a 3.60 earned run average for Miami.
Schneider said that two guys threw hard. It's great to compliment what we have.
The Royals were less busy than expected, though they did make a late trade with the Padres for a minor league outfielder.
He played in just 18 games for Kansas City this season and lost his job to a rising prospect. In 61 games for El Paso this season, the 27 year old was hitting.272 with 19 homers.
I was surprised. A business is what it is. The Royals are my favorite team. "I'll remember all the memories, and I'll be rooting for them," said the man who spent time in Kansas City. It's a new chance for me.
