In the wake of James Washington's injury, the Dallas Cowboys won't pursue any veteran wide receiver who is available in free agency.
For now.
Jerry Jones told the young guys to get the incentive. When we came out, we were very fond of them. Washington will be rehabbed. It doesn't mean that we need a veteran receiver. These young guys are very nice.
Multiple sources say that Washington is going to be out for up to 10 weeks. Michael Gallup is expected to miss at least the season opener due to a torn leftACL he suffered in January.
In a regular-season game, only Noah Brown and Cee Dee Lamb have caught passes from the quarterback. Lamb had a 1,000-yard season and was named to the Pro Bowl, but Brown has 39 catches in four years. Lamb caught a touchdown pass.
"We talk about growth, we talk about draft and development, here it is," McCarthy said. Every team that I've ever been the head coach of, there's always some level of projection and growth that needs to occur, so the only way to get there is through these training camp practices. You shouldn't wait until the preseason games to begin that process. In the season, you don't wait to give them chances. This is what it appears to be. It's unfortunate that James was hurt, but it's a chance for the young players to step up.
Outside of Lamb and Brown, the Cowboys have at least six players from the past two years: Dennis Houston, Jaquarii Roberson, Ty Fryfogle, and T.J. Vasher. Turpin led the USFL in receiving yards in the spring and was signed by the Cowboys last week.
Lamb said he's not opposed to having another vet in the building. I don't mind having help, but I prefer my young guys here now. In the heat of battle, I would like to see what they can do. There is only one way to discover it.
Lamb told the younger receivers that chances like the one presented to them are rare.
Lamb said the door is open for opportunities. The younger guys are trying to do something
When the Cowboys lost backup quarterback Kellen Moore to a broken ankle in the first week of camp in 2016 there was no need to rush to add a more proven receiver. The Cowboys didn't add a veteran and went with two rookies. He has held the job since the preseason when he became the starter.
Jones liked the young guys. We were going to have some trouble cutting our numbers at receiver because we liked the way some of these guys were showing. There's a lot of work to be done.
