Looking to replicate the deals that helped carry them to a World Series title in 2021, the Atlanta Braves added another starting pitcher.
Alex Anthopoulos started the day by completing a deal that brought right-handed pitcher Jake Odorizzi from the Houston Astros in exchange for former Atlanta Closer Will Smith.
Just barely beating the clock before 6 pm. The Braves traded Raisel Iglesias for Jesse Chavez and Tucker Davidson.
The flurry of trades, which also included Monday's less-prominent deal that brought Washington infielder Ehire Adrianza back to Atlanta, was reminiscent of the moves Anthopoulos pulled off at the 2021 deadline.
The Braves want to lead to the same outcome.
A year ago, Anthopoulos was able to assemble a whole new unit with deadline trades for Jorge Soler, Eddie Rosario, and Adam Duvall and the acquisition of Joc Pederson.
The Braves captured their first World Series title in 20 years. The National League Championship Series winner was Soler while the World Series winner was Rosario.
The Braves lost a large part of their championship team.
Smith had 37 saves for the Braves in the regular season and 11 in the playoffs.
Smith gave up the ninth-inning slot when the Braves signed Kenley Jansen in the off-season.
In 41 appearances, Smith was 0-1 with a 4.38 ERA and five saves, and gave up 35 hits, including seven homers, and 21 walks.
In his last four appearances with the Braves, Smith gave up six runs. He is making $13 million in what is likely the final year of his contract, which includes a $13 million club option for the following year.
It was difficult for Brian Snitker to see Smith go despite his struggles.
He was a large part of the team. There is a bond between you when you go through what we went through last year. There is a place in your heart for those guys.
Atlanta, with the third-best record in the NL and going into Tuesday trailing the East-leading New York Mets by 3 1/2 games, was willing to give up Smith to make room for another starter.
Both Ian Anderson and Mike Soroka are unlikely to contribute much this season because of injuries. Kyle Wright, who won 13 games in his first full big league season, could tire down the stretch.
Smith was expendable with three more effective lefties and a former Padres closer who is close to returning to the big league.
The Braves seemed to be done dealing, but Anthopoulos pulled off a last-minute trade for anotherReliever with extensive experience as a Closer
Iglesias was in Cincinnati for four seasons before moving to the Angels. The right-handed pitcher matched his career high with 34 saves and added 16 more this season with a 4.14 earned run average and 1.065 WHIP.
Anthopoulos said it came together late. It wasn't going to be done.
The Braves picked up the bulk of Iglesias' contract even though the team was mired in a dismal season. Each of the next three seasons he will make 16 million dollars.
Iglesias thought the trade was surprising. I would like to see us in a better place. I hope I can help the team. I will get ready. Being a part of that team will be great.
After being acquired from the Cubs in April, Chavez went 1-2 with a 2.11 earned run average in 31 appearances. He's moving on to his third team of the season, with a deal with a left-handed pitcher who got a surprise start in last year's World Series.
He's spent most of the season in Triple-A after only two starts. He was 1-2 with a 6.46 earned run in four appearances with the Braves.
The Minnesota Twins pitcher had a career-best 15 wins in his last season with the team. He missed a lot of time this season with a lower left leg injury.
Six starting pitchers could be used by the Braves on a three-city road trip. After that, Odorizzi could become a spot starter or step into a regular spot if someone fails.
Anderson improved his chances of staying in the rotation by giving up only one hit in his last start against the Nationals.
There is a minimum buy-out of $3.25 million that could grow based on the number of pitches thrown over the next two decades.
A switch-hitter who has been more effective against left-handed pitchers, Grossman gives the Braves an outfielder who can platoon with the lefty-hitting Rosario and serve as a replacement for Duvall, who recently underwent season-ending wrist surgery
"What a team they have here, and I'm fortunate enough to be a part of it," he said. I'm going to come in and do whatever I can to help the team win, that's what I'm going to do.
