The New York Mets have added a new player. The New York Post reported that the San Francisco Giants had acquired Ruf.

The Mets are sending Davis, Szapucki, Seymour, and Zwack to the Giants.

While Ruf can play both first base and left field, it is more likely that he will see time as New York's designated hitter. Pete Alonso plays first baseman, while Mark Canha plays left field.

The Mets knew they needed another bat as the former Pittsburgh Pirate has been particularly bad against left-handed pitchers this season, hitting.134/.266/.149 with sevenRBI.

Ruf is hitting.252 with nine home runs and 24 runs scored against left-handed pitchers. It's reasonable to think that he'll get the start at designated hitter against left-handed pitchers, while the other will get the start against right-handed pitchers.

The outfielder is hitting.270 with 12 home runs and 27 runs scored against right-handed pitchers.

After spending the first five years of his career in Philadelphia, Ruf has spent the last three years in San Francisco. He spent three seasons with the Korea Baseball Organization'sSamsung Lions after taking a break from baseball.

Davis has been with the Mets for four years. He's batting.235 with four home runs and 21 runs scored in 66 games. He was with the Astros for two seasons.

The Mets hold a 3.5 game lead over the Braves in the NL East. The addition of Ruf will give the club some much-needed help at the plate.
