John Boyega revisits his own experiences after being cast as Finn in "The Force Awakens." In an interview with Men's Health, Boyega was asked if he got any studio support, and he said no. He said "Hell no" I bring this to the forefront.
His Last Jedi co-star Kelly Marie Tran also experienced toxic fan backlash, and both saw their characters shift into more supporting roles by the end of the new trilogy. Lucasfilm was criticized for not doing more to address the racism of its fans or for not doing the characters justice. Boyega said that the people going into it now are cool. He said that his experience made the studio more protective of its talent from marginalized background, and that they are going to make sure you are well supported.
