The current limit of 120W of electricity is not enough to power all but the beefiest laptops, but soon it will be more than doubled. The cables are here and we are just waiting for the first computers to reach that peak. The PlugableUSBC-VAMETER3 is a brand-new 240W device that you can get in anticipation of that historic day.
The third generation of Plugable's handy power meter is what you would expect. It's possible to see how much power is being transferred between your gadgets by sticking it between them. It supports up to 250W, 50V, or 6.5A at a time instead of 100W.
Plugable was one of the first companies to sell such a device, and I have been using my first-gen model for years, but it may not look as cool as aUSB-C cable with a built-in power meter. It's great if you don't know if a particular cable is working or not, and it doesn't mess with data, though it doesn't work with Intel Thunderbolt 3 stuff
When other 240W gadgets don't exist, what's the point in buying a 240W meter? When you use the MagSafe cable, the MacBook Pro comes with a charging brick that can stretch past 100W. If your MagSafe cable still works, you could try to see if it's still working. The MakerHawk meter tops out at 30V, but also keeps track of time, temperature, and even estimates how much charge you have transferred.
Plugable charges a bit more for futureproof, but you won't have to pay it today. The company has been asking for a second-gen meter since February and it is currently on sale for just under $26.
By the way, there are now more than one type of cable available. Here's one from UGREEN, one from VCOM, and one from "AINOPE".
