The governments of California and Illinois declared monkeypox a public health emergency on Monday, following in the footsteps of several cities and New York state.

Calif. is a state As of August 1, the state had 825 confirmed cases of monkeypox, and the governor declared a state of emergency.

In Illinois, which has the third most infections in the US, the governor declared a monkeypox emergency.

New York became the first state to declare a disaster emergency due to the monkeypox outbreak.

San Francisco and New York City declared public health emergencies last week because of the outbreak.

President Biden Tuesday announced a new team to lead the White House's monkeypox response, including Robert Fenton with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, who will serve as the national monkeypox response coordination.

State and city public health emergency declarations can help governments coordinate responses to outbreak, target outreach to groups most at risk and expand treatment and vaccine efforts Emergency Medical Services personnel in California can administer FDA approved monkeypox vaccines. The federal government is trying to increase the number of vaccinations as cities and states complain of limited supplies.
