Donald Trump was upset that he wasn't allowed to join his supporters in attacking the Capitol, according to a former officer.
Mark Robinson, a retired D.C. police officer, told CNN that Trump wanted to visit the Capitol after his speech at the Ellipse.
Robinson said they have heard it several times while on the motorcade. The president was upset after finishing the speech because he was getting into the motorcade. He wanted to go to the capitol.
It was repeated when we left from the Ellipse. There was a fight in the limo. He would like to go to the Capitol.
Cassidy Hutchinson, a White House aide, testified that Trump tried to grab the steering wheel of the presidential limo in an attempt to get to the capitol.
Hutchinson told the panel that the president grabbed at the steering wheel. The agent grabbed his arm and said, "Sir, you need to take your hand off the steering wheel, we're going back to the West Wing." We aren't going to the capitol.
The story was told to her by the former White House operations chief.
The driver of the presidential limo and two other Secret Service officials have not yet testified that Hutchinson's account was incorrect. Private lawyers have been hired by all of them.
The members of the committee were told that some of the officers would be coming and talking. They have a right to retain private counsel because they have not come in.
Robinson said that he was relieved that the Secret Service did not allow the president to drive to the Capitol.
It might have encouraged more rioting. The rioters would have felt supported. The presidential motorcade would support them. The insurrectionists might have thought they had the support of the president.
