For the last 10 years, my appliance has been performing well. I wonder if it is showing signs of age, perhaps not being as efficient as it used to be. It's nothing that can't be fixed by toasting one more time.

I came across a smart toaster that promised faster toasting, a new heating-element design, and what the manufacturer called "smart toasting algorithms", which may have caused me to linger.

The speedier toast-making caught my attention. When a slice of toast is done to their preferred level of doneness on the outside but still moist and chewy on the inside, they like it. That perfect balance can be achieved with speed.

Revolution Cooking's two-slot toasts come with a 350- to 400-dollar price tag, which is crazy considering the competing top-rated two-slot toasts come with a similar price tag.

You can choose the type of bread you want, whether it's fresh or frozen, and how dark you want it on the front of the appliance. There's a switch for breads that aren't made with wheat.

There is a new way to toast. One of the two narrowest faces is where the screen is located. The arrangement allows you to set the narrow side forward so it doesn't take up too much counter width. You can choose from settings such as bread, bagel, instant waffles, or English muffins. The basic R180 comes with all of these options, as well as individual bread-specific settings like sourdough, multigrain cinnamon swirl, and agluten-free option.

It was enjoyable. Everyone wants the best for their toast. I had a lot of time with the basics. It wasn't possible to get consistent results from store-bought loaves of white bread and sourdough.

The test is called the toast test.

The Revolution has a screen that shows what your toast should look like when it's done. I had some sourdough at home that didn't look like the picture on the screen. It was usually underdone if it was using frozen bread. The bottom half-inch of a slice was often left untoasted and it was difficult to get one of the bottom corners done. My toast would come out burnt if I had to toast again.
