The prospect of a high-ranking US politician like Pelosi visiting Taiwan has enraged China, which claims the island as its own territory.

The map shows China's claim to the South China Sea even though it is much longer than a direct route.

The US and other Western countries have avoided sending high-ranking delegations to Taiwan due to China's stance. It would be a big change if Pelosi came.

The Taiwanese outlet specified an arrival time of around 10 pm local time, which would fit with Pelosi's flight path.

SPAR19 flew over Indonesia and turned north towards Taiwan. The site crashed multiple times as the flight went on.

The South China Sea region, which China claims as its own, has been militarised.

The US often sends Navy ships there, but may not have wanted to annoy China by flying Pelosi's plane over its waters.

According to sources, the course was chosen to avoid security threats.

In response to the visit, China has threatened to retaliate.
