The company said Tuesday that it will provide its lidar sensors and perception software to all Volkswagen group brands.
Cariad SE will integrate its technology into upcoming VW vehicles.
There are three design wins with a Tier 1 supplier. In May last year, an unnamed Tier 1 automotive supplier selected Innoviz for its autonomously shuttle program, after BMW revealed that its lidar would be on the i7 electric vehicle.
VW hasn't revealed which models will first be built with Innoviz's tech, but the automaker has been making moves towards boosting its advanced driver assistance systems. Earlier this year, Cariad and Bosch collaborated to develop software for automated driving in VW cars, and in May, VW chose the same platform to power its ADAS and automated driving.
The VW program, which brings with it a forward looking order book of $4 billion, takes the startup's total estimated sales up to $6 billion.
It is possible to achieve a high level of performance, up to 300 meters of visual range, using a 905 nanometer laser. Velodyne claims to be able to reach up to 300 meters of range. There are 128 lines at up to 20 frames per second. The company says that it has up to 20 frames per second.
It is claimed that Velodyne's products are priced in the thousands of dollars. It was not possible to confirm costs with the company.
We won the deal as a Tier 1 supplier and that's what sets the company apart. Only Innoviz has achieved this designation. This shows a major shift in the way that the automotive industry partners with their tech providers. Increased margins and profits are one of the benefits of being a tier 1 supplier.
