There is a small town in Oklahoma called Holdenville. An officer at an Oklahoma prison has died after being attacked by another prisoner.

The Davis Correctional Facility is a privately run prison that is 70 miles southeast of Oklahoma City. Inmates were returning to a housing area from recreation when Gregory Thompson attacked Hershberger from behind with a homemade weapon.

Thompson was placed in isolation and an investigation was under way.

In Oklahoma County, Thompson was sentenced to life in prison for a 2003 murder. He is currently serving a five-year sentence for a 2010 manslaughter conviction out of Pittsburg County. The Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester was the location of the murder.

The prison is run by CoreCivic.
