The leader of al- Qaeda has been killed by the US, according to President Joe Biden.
In a speech Monday, Biden said that Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in a US drone strike in Afghanistan on Saturday.
Justice has been delivered and the terrorist leader is dead. The US will find you and take you out no matter how long it takes.
The FBI had a reward of up to $25 million for information that would lead to the capture or conviction of Al-Zawahiri. After founding the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, he joined Al-Qaeda. He was sentenced for his part in a conspiracy to kill the Egyptian president.
He was indicted for the US embassy bombings in East Africa.
Biden said that they were still mourning every innocent life lost on 9/11. My hope is that this action will bring some sort of resolution to those families.
Biden delivered the speech even though he appeared fatigued.
After Bin Laden's death, Al-Zawahiri became the leader of the group.
Jarret Brachman, research director of the Combating Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, told The Washington Post in 2006 thatZawahiri is used to dominating from behind the scenes. He's similar to Dick Cheney of al- Qaeda.
The announcement of the drone strike operation is almost a year after the US withdrew from Afghanistan. The US will continue military operations by air against the Taliban and other groups after the pullout was announced by Vice President Biden.
In his speech, Biden said that the US military had been able to locate Al-Zawahiri and that he had returned to his family in Kabul. Biden said that no civilians or family members were hurt.
A US drone strike killed 10 Afghan civilians, including 7 children. The US military did not violate any laws of war according to the Pentagon.
