John Hughes was an "all-time great" according to Celtic.
Hughes was part of the team that won the European Cup in 1967.
In the 1970 European Cup final, the ex-Scotland forward appeared, but did not play.
The club said the family would mourn his passing.
John "Yogi" Hughes was popular with the Celtic support, who always recognised him as their own.
In front of a record-breaking crowd of over 130,000 fans, Hughes scored a goal in Celtic's European Cup semi-final victory against Leeds United, which was one of his most memorable strikes.
After a trophy-laden spell at Celtic, Hughes, who gained eight caps for Scotland, had a brief stint at Crystal Palace and then retired.
