The Washington Post said that al-Zawahri was killed by American forces, but didn't say where or how.

According to the White House, President Joe Biden is going to announce a successful counterterrorism operation.

An American drone strike on a residential neighborhood in Afghanistan's capital city of Kabul on Sunday was condemned by the Taliban, though it's not clear if the strike was related to al-Zawahri's death.

A surgeon by trade, al-Zawahri originally hailed from Cairo and led a group that sought to overthrow Egypt's secular government. He joined al-Qaeda in the late 1990s and became Osama bin Laden's top deputy as the group planned a series of terrorist attacks against the U.S. Al-Zawahri, who was believed to be hiding in Pakistan, was featured in some al-Qaeda videos after the hijackings. After the death of Osama bin Laden, al-Zawahri took over as leader of the group.
