A Texas man was sentenced to more than seven years in prison for storming the U.S. Capitol with a handgun, helmet and body armor.
According to a court filing, Guy Reffitt told fellow members of the Texas Three Percenters militia group that he was going to drag Nancy Pelosi out of the Capitol building.
The previous longest prison sentence for a Capitol riot defendant was seven years. Reffitt's 15-year prison term was requested by a federal prosecutor who said he wanted to remove and replace members of Congress.
The first person to go on trial for the attack was Reffitt.
Reffitt Friedrich was sentenced to prison and three years of supervised release by the U.S. District Judge who presided over his trial.
Reffitt has already been sentenced to 19 months in prison. They said he was part of a militia group that wanted to take over Congress to stop the Electoral College vote.
The sentencing guidelines called for a range of 9 years to 11 years and 3 months. In Reffitt's case, prosecutors argued that an "upward departure for terrorism" was necessary.
Two men were sentenced to five years and three months for attacking police officers at the Capitol.
Reffitt should be sentenced to no more than two years in prison, according to the defense attorney. Reffitt did not assault any law enforcement officers.
Videos show a mob of people approaching outnumbered Capitol police officers on the west side of the Capitol.
Reffitt was wearing body armor and a helmet with a video camera when he advanced on the officers, according to prosecutors. He retreated after an officer sprayed him in the face, but he waved at the other rioters.
Reffitt was found guilty of all five counts in his indictment in March of this year. He was found guilty of obstructing Congress, interfering with police officers outside the Capitol and threatening his children if they reported him to law enforcement.
Jackson testified that his father told him and his sister that they would be traitors if they reported him.
The Texas Three Percenters militia group was led by Guy Reffitt. There is a myth that only 3% of Americans fought in the Revolutionary War.
Reffitt lived with his family in Texas. He and another member of the militia group went to Washington, D.C.
Both of them were carrying holstered handguns when they attended the rally. Reffitt gave him two pairs of cuffs if they needed to detain anyone.
A lot of people have been charged with federal crimes. Most of them have pleaded guilty to lesser charges. Nearly half of the people sentenced have been sentenced to prison. Approximately 150 other people have trial dates that last into the future.
