When Arnold Donald got a call that made his words seem like a pun, he was retired andcruising through life.

The former Monsanto executive was asked to oversee a lot of change at the world's largest cruise company.

Donald, who had been on Carnival's board for 13 years, would have been forgiven for not taking the job. At the age of 50, he was able to enjoy the fruits of his success and buy a baseball team.

At one point, he was being asked to lead Carnival Corp., which was reeling from the aftermath of a fire that left the Carnival Triumph floating off Mexico without power for days. Travel advisors did not feel supported by Carnival's brands, and the company had faced a decline in both consumer and investor confidence.

Donald agreed to the proposal. After nine years as the third CEO in the company's history and the first black CEO of a major cruise company, he will retire on August 1st.

Donald thinks that Carnival and cruising is good for society.

He thought it would be a great place to make a difference. We bring people together when we travel and on cruises.

He said that Carnival brings people together to discover what they have in common so they can celebrate their differences rather than fear them.

Leveraging Carnival Corp.'s brand power

Donald had a lot to do. Nine world-leading cruise line brands that were not making each member more powerful were what he had.

He said that each was powerful in its own way. We were a federation of brands that did not leverage the scale of being a federation.

The lines started to communicate and collaborate under Donald. The brands are very different in terms of who they cater to, but there are some common things that they can learn from each other.

He decided to put boots on the ground to find out why the travel advisors were not happy with Carnival. He didn't say who he was when he went to travel agencies. He was listening to the calls. He had a meeting with advisers.

There were some challenges across the brands. Let's organize around that The brands responded. We were able to make progress.

Carnival tripled its earnings during Donald's first five years as CEO. His legacy is much more than finances.

Diversity and doing good

The first cruise ship from the United States to Cuba in 50 years was sailed by Carnival Corp. The introduction of the Ocean Medallion technology was led by him. The first black CEO of a major cruise line was hired by him. The first woman president of its largest brand was hired.

Donald wanted Carnival to be more widespread because of the nationalities on ships.

He said that inclusion is taking advantage of the diversity by making certain people have the platform to speak with confidence their points of view and that those points of view are heard and considered. Even today, that is ongoing work.

Donald wanted the company to be more inclusive.

"If you're looking for a candidate with a certain amount of experience, then I don't have diversity because it's not in those levels," he said. The board did with me what you have to do.

Donald's new cruise brand, Fathom, is dedicated to passengers doing good in the destinations they visit. The reason Carnival was the first in Cuba was due to Fathom's mission being compatible with the guidelines of Cuba travel.

It didn't make it. Donald has no bad things to say.

He said there's always learning from those experiences. We did it because we knew there was a great risk and we wanted to give it a try. It is important to try.

Donald had stumbles during his time in office. Carnival was fined by the Justice Department the largest on record for dumping waste into the ocean. It was fined for violating the terms of its parole. Donald said he would be the best in class for compliance.

Carnival has invested more than $350 million in energy efficiency improvements and has a goal of being net carbon-neutral by the year 2050. The first company to launch cruise ships powered by natural gas was also the first to run a ship made from sustainable raw materials.

Donald is proud of the fact that Carnival Corp's carbon emissions peaked in 2011.

Post-pandemic optimism

The cruise industry was shut down for more than a year due to the swine flu. Donald said he is leaving as confident as he was when he took the reins.

The company's ships are 30 to 40 years old. Over time, you have to think about it. It's not possible to get caught up in a single moment, whether it's a spike in fuel price or a natural disaster.

We're an experience and that's why the future is bright. People are fond of travel and adventure. We're what we are. We are a human spirit business. There is always a need for that.
