In a statement issued by the UN Secretary-General's office, it was stated that the vessel M/V Razoni was carrying 26,528 tons of corn.

Tripoli, Lebanon, which is currently facing a severe economic and food crisis, will be the first port of call for the vessel after it passes through Istanbul.

The M/V Razoni left the port of Odesa at 09.55 am on Monday.

A UN-Chartered ship is expected to arrive in Odesa in the next few days to pick up 30,000 metric tons of Ukrainian wheat for the World Food programme.

$10 billion is a large amount of money. Ukrainian President Voldomyr Zelensky said last month that the total value of grain in storage is greater than the total value of shipments.

Key Background

The UN and the Turkish government helped broker a deal between Russia and Ukraine to allow for the safe passage of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea. The Russian Navy agreed to end its blockade of ships carrying Ukrainian grain in exchange for allowing Russia to export its own grain andfertilizer. Around 22 million tons of grains have remained in storage after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which is considered the bread basket of Europe and Africa. Tens of millions of people in Africa and the Middle East face the threat of hunger because of the cut off of Ukrainian grain exports.

Zelenskyy thinks that the grain blockade will cause famine.
