The Senate seat that Wisconsin Democrats lost in the 2010 election has been a goal of theirs for a long time.

After Ron Johnson defeated Russ Feingold twice in a row, Democrats saw the conservative businessman become a nationally-recognized lawmaker who remained popular among the GOP base.

Tammy Baldwin easily winning reelection to a second term after seeing Donald Trump defeat Hillary Clinton in the state two years earlier.

The party continued to build on that success. One of the five states that flipped from red to blue was Wisconsin.

The race to take on Johnson in the general election was the center of attention in the lead-up to 2022.

Most of the top-tier candidates have left the race since the Democratic primary on August 9. In one of the most consequential Senate races in the country this year, the latter is favored to win the nomination and serve as the party's nominee against Johnson.

With the Senate evenly divided between the parties, Democrats see Wisconsin as one of their top pickup opportunities, with Biden having carried the state in 2020.

Johnson is popular with the party's grass-roots supporters who came out in force for Trump. While the former president fell short in the presidential election in the state, he was far more popular than the public polls showed.

Republicans feel confident about Johnson's chances because of the senator's previous wins, Biden's low approval ratings, and a national political environment that will favor Republicans in November.
