MGM released the Tomb Raider remake in the summer of 2018, and it did very well. After the events of Crystal Dynamics' reboot trilogy, it seemed like a sure thing that a sequel would be in the works for Vikander. It isn't happening and another one is taking it's place.
MGM lost the rights to Tomb Raider as a film intellectual property and now studios are bidding for it. As a result of the change of ownership, Vikander's Croft is out, with no actor in consideration for the role or a director taking charge of another film. The series, which will star Haley Atwell as Croft and is set in the continuity of the rebooted games, is still in the works.
Tomb Raider is a series of games and a movie. The original duology of the 2000s made over 400 million dollars, and the film made over 300 million dollars in 2019. It's only natural that a studio would want to continue that franchise since Indiana Jones seems set to bow out.
The news of Tomb Raider's film version getting a remake comes around the same time as an alleged script for Crystal Dynamics' upcoming Tomb Raider game has been made public. A group of new treasure hunters are going to be trained by a more experienced one to help her find a bigger threat than herself. It will be awhile before the game comes out, and likely even longer before we get news of a new movie starring either an established or new actress.
