For celebrities and New Yorkers looking to escape NYC, the Hamptons is a good place to go.
I went out to eat, party, and experience what all the hype is about.
There were many aspects that were not what I expected.
The Hamptons seems like a great place to go for a relaxing summer vacation.
I think it is for people who own homes there. It can be filled with let-down for other people.
It's not easy to get to the Hamptons during the summer. The drive was full of traffic.
Getting around is difficult once you're there. The price of gas was very high during my visit.
The alternative to taking a ride in an automobile was more expensive. If you want to go to The Surf Lodge on a non- holiday weekend, you'll have to pay around $100.
You might be looking forward to enjoying some peace and privacy on the beach, but a lot of them are only available to residents.
There can be a lot of people at the public beaches.
Many of the neighborhoods around these private beaches are beautiful, but don't expect to be able to ride around looking at luxurious houses all day, because many of the large properties have thick hedges blocking street views.
There were a lot of cars in the parking lot during the day. I was able to park on the street a few times, but the lots were full.
The traffic was backed up late in the day.
Many places that don't take reservations have long wait times because of the large crowd.
Bars and clubs were crowded. People waiting for four hours to get into Stephen Talkhouse were told they couldn't get in without a table for over $1,000.
Food in general was very expensive. I used to pay the same price for the same menu item from a New York City deli or street cart.
The most expensive lobster roll I ate was $42. I was told that most of the meat is imported from Maine.
If I were visiting in the future and wanted to save money and time waiting in lines, I would get groceries from farm stands and cook instead of eating out.
