Jota's rasping strike sealed an opening-day win for Celtic over new-look Aberdeen

Jota's stunning long-range drive capped off victory for Celtic as they began their title defense with a win.

The reigning champion got off to a perfect start when Stephen Welsh glanced in at the near post.

The new-look side posed a threat in the first period.

Jota's strike gave Celtic the win.

The Parkhead side stretched their run over Aberdeen to 18 games and matched the opening day result of title rivals Rangers, who won at Livingston.

  • Reaction & as it happened

As the title-winning flag was hoisted, recent memories of Celtic's previous triumph were brought to the forefront of the crowd.

After the first whistle, those thoughts were parked to one side as the attention turned to retaining the title.

The men were looking to bring down the party volume. When Matt O'Riley's corner was glanced in by Welsh the away side failed to achieve that.

Aberdeen conceded possession time and time again as Celtic probed continuously for a second.

After hanging on for the majority of the first period, the Aberdeen attack showed signs of promise late in the half as they missed a great chance to level.

The visitors couldn't take advantage of the few chances that came their way in the first half.

Jota was on hand to jink past his marker and rifle in an unstoppable shot from over 20 yards, polishing off a hard fought opening victory.

Celtic still finding range amid bright start

Celtic started this season in better shape than they were a year ago after winning the title.

In contrast to Sunday's starting line-up, there were only two players in Postecoglou's XI at Tynecastle last July.

The lack of debutants highlighted how much the Australian values continuity in his side, while the Celtic boss brought off his bench highlighted the embarrassment of his resources.

Minor concerns about his side's lack of control at the end of the first half and lack of clinical edge throughout the game will be raised by his demand for near- perfection.

The lack of ruthlessness can be attributed to the effort and dig of the side.

Many teams would have crumbled under the relentless pressure Aberdeen had to deal with, and a better end product and finishing touch would have seen the visitors find a way back into the game.

It was a tough first assignment, but Goodwin can take solace in the fact that there are a lot of good games to look forward to.

What did they say?

The Celts had good control of the game and started it well. We slackened off with our passing in the last 15 minutes of the first half and Aberdeen came into the game.

We controlled the game in the second half, but I thought we needed to be more decisive as we were wasteful in front of goal.

The fixture was going to be difficult on flag day. We didn't get off to a good start. We gave away a silly corner and didn't defend it as we should have.

The players didn't let their heads go down and tried to play at times, even though they were a little sloppy in possession, and it would have been interesting had that got in.

What's next?

Next Saturday is the first time this season that Celtic and Aberdeen will play each other.
