Scorecard

In the deciding Twenty20 against South Africa, England's abysmal batting display resulted in a 90 run loss.

England went 55 balls without hitting a boundary before they were dismissed for 101 in the Ageas Bowl.

It is the fourth time in six T20s this summer that England have been dismissed for less than 200 and there was another failure for Roy, who made 17 off 18 balls.

Bairstow top-scored with 27 while Tabraiz Shamsi ripped through England with career-best figures.

England have failed to win a white-ball series in a home summer for the first time in five years and have lost a third successive T20 series after defeats by West Indies and India.

The Proteas posted 191-5 in their 50 overs, with Reeza Hendricks making 70 off 50 balls and Aiden Markram hitting an unconquered 51 off 36.

David Willey was the pick of England's bowlers, taking 3-25, including the removal of Quinton de Kock in the first over.

England will play a three-Test series against South Africa in August.

Their next assignment will be a seven-game tour of Pakistan in September, followed by three T20s against Australia in October and November.

England's top-order struggles continue

England's success in white-ball cricket has been built on their top-order power. It didn't produce this summer.

In six games, Roy has contributed 76 runs at a strike-rate of 77.55, compared to his career average of 137.77.

He was frustrated as he tried to pull Anrich Nortje but could only get through to De Kock.

England only managed to hit two boundaries in the powerplay, compared to South Africa's 10, despite the fact that Buttler had another start.

The England batting line-up never had any rhythm, with eight of them caught in a fine South Africa fielding performance.

There were ironic cheers around the Ageas Bowl when Bairstow hit a four, but Sam and Willey fell in the same over.

England have been unable to put together two batting performances in a row this summer and with a World Cup just 10 competitive games away that will be of grave concern to captain Buttler.

Patient approach reaps rewards for Proteas

After a fortuitous start with several edges past his stumps, he did so superbly, bringing up his third consecutive fifty of the series.

The tourists were patient, going 40 balls without a boundary at one point but hitting the gaps well on a big Ageas Bowl surface before Hendricks kicked on and fell.

Markram and David Miller hit four successive fours in the 17th over to help post a total that proved beyond England.

In order to find the first choice XI for the World Cup in Australia this autumn, England have been experimenting with different bowling combinations.

Sam was deployed more in the middle overs and Jordan had a hard time going for 52 from his 4 overs.

It left Willey, who has had a mixed record at the end of the game, to bowl the final over and he dismissed Miller and Stubbs.

It was another bowling performance that left questions about how England will cope in a major event if the injured pace bowlers are not available.

'We lacked intent and confidence' - reaction

It was a good score on the board, but I still had faith in the group. The way we played the way we went down is the most disappointing thing.

We did not put the opposition under pressure. The initiative was never able to be wrestled by us.

David Miller said it was a privilege to play 100 caps for his country and to top it off with a performance like today from the boys was amazing.

We have come a long way in the last 18 months. The way the guys put their hands up in important moments is what we want.

Tabraiz Shamsi was the player of the game. The guys who were bowling before me put on a good show.

My wife told me before the game that she wanted four. I was more animated with celebrations today.
