In New York, grand larcenies have gone up by 42%, robbery has gone up 34%, and the theft of property has gone up 36%.

Cigarettes, over-the-counter medication, contraceptives, liquor, teeth-whitening strips, and health and beauty products are some of the items that have been stolen from stores.

Adrian Beck told CNN that stores must protect the "vital few" profitable items over the less lucrative "trivial many" if they are to survive.

Store employees can't stop shoplifters, but plastic anti-theft cases can.
