Sometimes the sun becomes more active and other times it becomes less active. The sun is predicted to be more active as we go through an upswing of its current cycle. The sun has exceeded these predictions so far.

The activity of the Solar Cycle 25 has been increasing. The activity is scheduled to peak in a period called the solar maximum, which is set for the year 2025. Satellites and communication systems on Earth can be impacted by space weather caused by solar flares and mass ejections from the sun.

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this image of a solar flare – as seen in the bright flash towards the middle of the Sun – on Tuesday, May 10, 2022. The image shows a subset of extreme ultraviolet light that highlights the extremely hot material in flares and which is colorized in teal.

There was a solar flare on May 10, 2022. The instrument records in the extreme ultraviolet range. There is a bright spot in the sun.

The solar cycle will see more of these types of events. According to NASA, the Solar Cycle 25 Prediction Panel predicted that this would be a below average solar cycle like the one before it. The sun has been more active than expected.

When charged particles arrive on our planet and interact with the atmosphere, they create the Auroras. These particles can cause problems for satellites which can lead to communications issues. There are health concerns for crew and passengers flying on airplanes because of space weather.
