The Lionesses stand on the verge of women's football history as they take on Germany in the European Championship final on Sunday.

It would be the first major trophy for the England women's team and the first football honor for the nation in 50 years.

It is predicted that a victory will catapult women's football in England to new heights.

The Germans have won the competition eight times. They defeated England in the final of Euro 2009, the last time they met.

Wembley has an 87,200 capacity for the Euros and is expected to sell out.

Millions of people are expected to watch the match on the website of the British Broadcasting Corporation.

A peak TV audience of 9 million watched the semi- final. The UK record for women's football is held by England's World Cup semi-final against the USA, which was watched by over 11 million people.

Both teams have been the best in the tournament and have shown their class in reaching the final.

The Lionesses justified their status as one of the pre-tournament favorites with a four goal demolition of Sweden, who were ranked second in the world.

What's England's record like against Germany?

Celebrities & sport stars send good luck messages to Lionesses

We described their record against Sweden as "shocking" and things went well in the semi-finals.

If England are to win in the capital, they'll have to rewrite the record books.

They haven't won a meeting against Germany since February.

England have lost more games against the Germans than any other side, while they have been on the losing side in all four meetings.

"These are the games you want to watch," said England's captains.

It is a fairy-tale fixture. Two teams have had the best tournaments in the final

They don't have an advantage in home games. Our national stadium is familiar to us and the support we have received has been amazing. We have that on our side.

According to data analysts, England has a better chance of winning at home than Germany.

England's party in the women's and men's games has been spoiled by Germany in the past.

Wembley will be English in the beginning and I hope it stays English at the end.

We want to play as a team and be aggressive. This has been a success so far.

Battle of the bosses - Wiegman v Voss-Tecklenburg

It's time for history to be made by SarinaWiegman and Voss-Tecklenburg.

The England boss has won all 11 of her games at the Euros. Five years ago, she led the Netherlands to a victory.

She is hoping to become the first coach to win the tournament with two different teams when she leads England.

England huddle
England have yet to lose under Sarina Wiegman

In her 19 games as England's coach, she has not lost a game and has only drawn two of them.

The only other woman to win the competition as both a player and a coach was former team-mates of Voss-Tecklenberg.

She wants to become the first coach to win Europe's top club and national team competition.

Golden Boot up for grabs

The champion of Europe will not be the only winner on Sunday. The winner of the Golden Boot will go head-to-head with another player.

England's Beth Mead and Germany'sAlexandra Popp have both scored six goals in five matches.

Popp became the first player to score in five consecutive Euros games when he netted his fifth goal in a row in the win over Norway.

The first player to score in every match at a European Championship was FrenchmanMichel Platini.

Alan Shearer scored seven goals in a single Euros tournament for England in 1996.

If both players end the game with the same number of goals, it will go down to assists, with Mead laying on four goals for her team mates.

Legacy of the tournament

The Euros have shattered attendance records.

The previous record for a European Women's Championship was broken before the final. It was passed in the group stages.

The opening game of the Women's Euros set a new attendance record with over 68,000 people at Old Trafford.

The record for the men's or women's Euros is expected to be broken by the final. The men's 1964 final between Spain and the Soviet Union was watched by nearly 80,000 people. The Euro 2020 final between England and Italy was limited due to Covid restrictions.

Increased investment by the Football Association and into the Women's Super League in previous years are partially to blame for the success of the tournament.

Ian Wright wondered what was going to happen if girls weren't allowed to play football in PE like the boys.

Many people will be inspired by this. What are we doing if there isn't a legacy after the Olympics? The girls should be allowed to play.

The FA's goal is for 75% of schools to give equal access for girls to play football by the year 2024. Girls have less access to football than boys.

She hopes that the success of the tournament will bring joy to the nation.

Before a tournament, legacy begins. Most people think it's something that happens after a tournament, but we've been working on very good legacies.

Karen Bardsley was on the bench when England lost to Germany in the Euro 2009.

She thinks people don't know the impact this will have on the women's game. This is going to be the norm in a few years.
