The Washington Post reported on Saturday that a hot mic caught Rep. Matt Gaetz reassuring Roger Stone that he would be granted clemency as he prepared to go to trial.

Stone was indicted on one count of obstruction, five counts of making false statements to the FBI, and one count of witness tampering.

Stone was found guilty. He was sentenced to 40 months in prison in February 2020 but his sentence was later commuted by Trump.

Gaetz told Stone that he would likely be found guilty but also be granted clemency, according to The Post.

Stone was told by Gaetz that the boss still had a positive view of him. Gaetz made it clear that Trump had said it directly.

He said that the big guy couldn't let you go down for this.

The congressman told Stone that he was working on getting him a pardon but didn't want to talk about it further since there were many microphones backstage.

Gaetz said that he doesn't feel in a position to speak freely about the work he's already done on that topic.

In July 2020 Trump commuted Stone's sentence.

The president said that Roger Stone was a victim of the Russia hoax perpetuated by the Left and its allies in the media. There was no coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia.
