If Nancy Pelosi's plane is escorted by US fighter planes on its way to Taiwan, it could be attacked by the Chinese military.

Pelosi left on Friday for a tour that could include a stop in Taiwan, the self-governed island democracy at the center of rising tensions between Beijing and Washington.

If US fighter jets escort Pelosi's plane into Taiwan, it is an invasion. The People's Liberation Army has the right to force Pelosi's plane and the US fighter jets to leave the runway.

Hu said to shoot them down if they were ineffective.

Hu was dubbed "China's troll king" by the Guardian. Hu was the editor-in-chief and party secretary of the Global Times, where he helped establish a chest-thumping new tone for China.

Pelosi's aides don't know if the Speaker will visit Taiwan.

"There's no reason for it to come to that, to come to blows, to increase physical tension," said John Kirby. There is no reason for that because there has been no change in American policy.

Tensions between China and Taiwan have been high for a long time. Taiwan, an island democracy of 23 million that broke away from Communism in 1947, sees itself as an independent state.

Beijing has warned about the possibility of Pelosi visiting the island. The Pentagon is planning to call upon US warplanes and ships if a visit goes ahead, according to reports.

A visit to Taiwan by Pelosi could lead to a military crisis in the region, according to military experts in China.

Bonnie Glaser is the director of the Asia program at the German Marshall Fund of the United States.

Pelosi would be the highest-ranking US lawmaker in over two decades to visit Taiwan if she goes.
