There are dozens of beautiful beaches to swim, surf, or simply sunbathe in Australia's largest city.

If you stay near the city center, you have a choice of beaches to choose from, from pocket-sized harbor bays to legendary surf spots with pounding waves and lashings of Australia's beach culture.

Bondi Beach is closest to Sydney's city center

One of the most popular beaches in the world is in Australia. It's the closest ocean beach to the city center, but a bit of a challenge to get to via the bus. If you are confident in waves, it is ideal for a rough and tumble swim. The saltwater sea baths can be found at either end of the beach. Wheelchairs can be booked through the pavilion.

Spot celebs from Home and Away at Palm Beach

Home and Away was filmed in Palm Beach, which is a crescent of bliss. The Barrenjoey Lighthouse is located in the northern part of the headland. There is a magnificent ocean beach and a pleasant strip on Pittwater in the suburb of Palm Beach. You can take ferries to other Pittwater destinations from here.

There's quality snorkeling at Shelly Beach

There is a 0.6 mile walk to the ocean cove from the main beach strip. Fishing has been banned in the cabbage tree aquatic reserve for a couple of decades so it is a great place to snorkel. You can go back to the main beach on a calm day. Ecotreasures is a good place to look for guided tours.

Manly Beach is ideal for beginner surfers

There is a strand of the beach lined with Norfolk Island pines and midrise apartments. The south end of the beach is known as South Steyne, while the north end is known as Queenscliff. The surf school is located right on the sand and offers good two-hour surf lessons year-round. It's worth the trip if you get to it by ferry.

Escape the crowds by kayaking to Store Beach

Store Beach is a gem on North Head and can only be reached by kayak. You should pack a picnic lunch with plenty of water and adventure in mind. Access is not allowed from dusk to dawn because it's a breeding ground for fairy penguins.

Balmoral is the best beach for a family day out

There is a beautiful swimming beach and some good restaurants in the North Shore enclave of Balmoral. Families from this well-heeled neighborhood picnic on the islet which is split in two by a bridge. The swimmers migrate to the southern end.

Coogee has wonderful ocean baths

The three oceanside pools are on the south side of the beach. The McIver's Ladies Baths is a place for women and children only. No photography is allowed and no noise is allowed. At high tide, it is possible to swim out to the sea at the Sea Baths, which has a larger rock pool cut in the cliffs. Giles Baths is a natural sea bath which can get a little wild in storms. The clifftop walk between the two cities is recommended by everyone.

Nudists head for Lady Bay Beach

Lady Bay Beach is close to the entrance of the Harbour and can be used for nude swimming and sunbathing. You can get to the ferry wharf from Circular Quay. If you want to make a day of it, you should bring your own food and water. The 100m strip of sand is reduced even further by high tides. There is a relaxed vibe at the harborside beach.

Bronte Beach has a great atmosphere

The oldest surf club in the world is said to be at Bronte Beach, which is a family-oriented beach hemmed in by sandstone cliffs. The beach is named after Lord Nelson, not the literary sisters. There is a kiosk and a changing room attached to the surf club. There is a waterfall in a patch of remnant bush.

Avalon is the best beach for a surf challenge

Avalon is the mythical Australian beach that you always dreamed of but never found. The headland has a boutique for a backdrop. The southern end has a sea pool. There are good eating options in the streets.

Maroubra Beach is a top spot for experienced surfers

The last major beach before you hit Botany Bay is Maroubra Beach, which is located in the suburbs and is immune from the pretentiousness of Bondi. If you just want to sit on the sand and watch the action, the breaks here are good for you. There are shark attacks in this area.

Find peace and quiet at Parsley Bay

Parsley Bay has a calm swimming beach, a lawn filled with sandstone sculptures for picnics and play, a cafe and a suspension bridge. Water dragons are native to the area and you should keep an eye out for them.
