An attorney for Donald Trump said in an interview that she was going to file a lawsuit against CNN for defamation over their reporting on the former president's election fraud claims.
Lindsey Halligan said that CNN branded Trump as a liar and referred to his questions about voter fraud as The Big Lie.
Hitler used the term "the big lie" to describe a lie so egregious that no one would believe it.
On Wednesday, Trump released a statement detailing his intent to file a lawsuit against CNN over their coverage of his voter fraud claims. "Lie" is defined in his statement as something that the speaker believes to be untrue.
"In this instance, President Trump's comments are not lies: He subjectively believes that the results of the 2020 presidential election turned on fraudulent voting activity in several key states," the former president wrote.
According to some legal scholars, Trump's stance that voter fraud may be key to his defense may make it harder to prove criminal intent. It is possible that Trump's willful blindness to the facts of the case establishes intent and serves as evidence.
The media, as well as conservative politicians, lawyers for the Trump administration, and allies of the president, have all discredited the former president's voter fraud claims.
If you're going to call someone a liar, back it up with facts. Don't report it, don't distort the truth, that's what Halligan said during an interview. I believe that CNN will be getting served with a lawsuit very soon after they told us that they wouldn't back down.
According to the latest information available through the Florida Bar Association, Halligan was previously employed with the law firm Cole, Scott & Kissane specializing in property insurance claims. She isn't sure where she is practicing law.
Halligan did not reply immediately.
