What does DK Metcalf's extension mean for the Seahawks' rebuild? (1:17)

Jeff talked about how the extension plays into the long-term plans of the team. I think it's 1:14.

Even though the star wide receiver remained confident that it would end in a deal, several months of contract negotiations gave him a lot of concern.

"It was a lot of work, but I'm happy that it's over now."

That stress didn't completely give way to joy until Metcalf took the stage at the auditorium inside the headquarters, a full day after the two sides had agreed to a three-year extension. After signing the deal Friday morning, Metcalf spoke to reporters flanked by the coach and general manager.

As I sat up here, it hit me. I told my parents and I was happy. My parents started crying but I was smiling. It came to me when I sat up here. It's time for you to take charge.

Schneider thanked Metcalf for the patience and professionalism he showed during a negotiating process that began at the scouting combine in February and was repeatedly impacted by the megadeals signed by other marquee receiver this season.

When he mentioned some gamesmanship he used in negotiations, he drew a laugh. When he was asked if it was any more nerve-racking, he said it was.

Something was going to be done. As much as I told John, it was going to be here. I wanted to be here. I want to play here and I'm happy that we got something done.

A source said that the signing bonus is the highest ever for a wide receiver. He is the sixth- highest-paid receiver in the league with an average of $24 million a year.

He thanked everyone that helped him get to this point. I'm not finished yet. The chip hasn't left.

Six months after he suffered a neck injury that ended his final season at Ole Miss and threatened to end his football career, Metcalf developed a chip-on-the-shoulder after falling to the final pick of the draft.

Schneider talked about how determined Carroll was to get that pick. After the Seahawks chose safety Marquise Blair in the middle of the second round, PeteCarroll stepped out of the draft room to talk with the newest player. Schneider reached a deal with New England to move up to No. 64, where Seattle would pick up Metcalf. Schneider slowed- played it before he broke the good news.

"He said, 'You have to be kidding'." Do you know if DK Metcalf will be on our team? Schneider made a statement. It was great to have that exchange right there. The trade allowed us to get up to the 64th pick. I will always remember that. It was a great time.

The most prolific start of any receiver in franchise history has been achieved by Metcalf. His 3,170 receiving yards are the most by any Seahawk in their first three seasons, while his 29 touchdown in that time are one shy of the record.

He missed the mandatory minicamp and the first two practices of training camp because of a hold-in. He is expected to participate in the next practice. He said that he has no issues with his left foot, which he had surgery on in the off-season.

Being able to see him be more than just a football player is a thrill for me. He's a great athlete, he's a beast, everybody talks about that. I don't want to hear about him. He has a lot to offer and he is a complete person.

The state of Mississippi has a problem with obese people.

He said it hasn't hit him until now that he has the chance to help so many people back home. When I broke my neck, I was told I couldn't play football again. It's all a blessing right now. It took a village for me to get here.
