Researchers have cataloged optical illusions created in the sky for the first time in 5000 years.

There are often atmospheric optical illusions from known sources and rarer halos that are currently a mystery.

The water ice is small enough to cause halos. The shape and orientation of the ice scatter from and the path light takes towards the crystals determine the qualities of these atmospheric illusions. The shape of the halo created by the crystal behind the scattering can be used to identify it.

Earth's atmosphere is so special.

Since 1895 B.C., when the Babylonian era began, atmospheric illusions have been documented by humans. Thanks to the proliferation of mobile phones, scientists have never had so much data on phenomena at their fingertips.

The new research highlights gaps in the study of the phenomena, in addition to an intensive catalog of halos. The authors behind the inventory laid out promising methods for both their further observation and the processing of collected data, and urged the public to get involved in recording these phenomena using their phones and digital photography.

The phenomenon is divided into 118 different types and details the conditions needed to make them are in the catalog.

At least once a year, halos are formed by the scattering, refraction and focusing of light from the sun or reflected off of the moon by hexagonal ice crystals.

halos with known origins and those with unknown and exotic sources are included in the category of "rare halos".

"As a rule, halos are formed as a result of the interaction of light with hexagonal crystals of water ice," the scientist said. Some of the halos can't be explained in this way.

Some examples of exotic halos were named by Moilanen. Since their discovery at the beginning of the 20th century, the mysteries of elliptical halos have not been solved. The so-called Moilanen arcs, which I first discovered in 1995, are among the mysteries.

The key to atmospheric halos could be ice crystals with strange shapes or minerals in the air, according to the researchers.

According to research, the unusual shape of exotic halos is due to human-caused factors, such as atmospheric emissions or strong electrical fields. The orientation of ice crystals in the air could be disrupted by these factors.

The samples of ice crystals formed exotic halos were collected in the atmosphere, but the experience gave more questions than answers.

halos observed in the atmosphere of Mars could be used to understand the thin diffuse atmosphere of the Red Planet.

There are clouds of water ice or other minerals in the atmosphere of Mars. The halos may be formed by carbon dioxide crystals.

She said that modeling the factors that can lead to the formation of a halo could provide valuable information.

Their research was published in a journal.
