If you are still not over the loss of Iron Man in the movie, please get over it. If the trailer is to be believed, we are about to enter the phase where we will be made to cry.
The directors of Endgame shared an anecdote about Robert Downey Jr.'s last bow as Tony Stark. It was important for the directors to handle it well. The co-star and Iron Man director were surprised by it. Jon Favreau called us after reading the script and asked if we were really going to kill Iron Man. Anthony shared it with others.
He remembered the moment it went down. The man did. It's true. On the corner of the stage, on the phone, I was trying to talk him off a ledge. He said you can't do this. You don't want people to walk out of the theater and into traffic. We did it, anyway. It was heartbreaking to say goodbye to the father of the MCU. Even though he had sacrificed his life, Joe said they felt like they had earned the arcs.
It was difficult to find the final moment. Downey improvised lines and they tried a few versions, some more sarcastic than others, and originally settled on a version where he didn't say anything when he snapped. They did it a third time. Jeff Ford, who edited the first Iron Man movie, came up with an idea. Anthony said that he had been with the character since the beginning. Joe got into the pool. Jeff said he was Iron-Man after he hit play. We told them to stop. Downey was told to put the suit back on. He had already said goodbye to the character.
There was more to the emotional journey of finding Iron Man's last scene. Anthony said, "That pickup we did with Robert was at a stage in Los Angeles; it was directly across from the stage where he originally auditioning for Iron Man, to make the whole thing even more devastating for Robert." There is a sad but happy synchronicity in film cinema that is not lost on the directors. He was asked to put the suit on, come back to where he was originally hired, and give his final line.
We love this 3000 even though we are in our feelings again. The interview can be watched below.
