Graham Alexander was left despondent as Motherwell lose to Sligo Rovers

Graham Alexander left his job as Motherwell boss by mutual consent.

The 50-year-old was appointed in January 2021.

Fir Park has won just five games in the past four years.

Chris Lucketti left the club as well.

Chairman Jim McMahon told the Motherwell website: "Graham asked to speak with us early on Friday morning and everyone agreed that it would be best to make a change.

Although the timing is not ideal, we hope a change will bring about fresh motivation for everyone ahead of the 2022-23 season.

  • Alexander accepts Euro exit criticism

Alexander took over from Stephen Robinson and kept Motherwell off the bottom of the table.

The Fir Park club was in the fight for Europe when the former Scotland defender steered them to safety.

They recorded just three league victories in the second half of the season and finished fifth.

The season got off to a bad start when they lost a first-leg home match by a single goal.

Motherwell haven't announced who will be in charge of the team for the opening game of the season.

Alexander said he enjoyed his time at Motherwell and wished the club well in the future.

We qualified for Europe in our first full season, 18 months after we joined the league, and after securing our status in the top flight. Our points tally is close to Rangers and Celtic.
