A motorcyclist in Utah was killed over the weekend after a car's autopilot system was turned on.
Another crash involving the controversial driver assistance feature has been added to the long list of crashes being investigated by the NHTSA.
The motorcyclist was hit by a car in the early hours of Sunday. Police said the rider died at the scene after sustaining fatal injuries.
The NHTSA's Special Crash investigations list includes 48 crashes and 39 of which involveTesla vehicles. Nineteen deaths have been linked to the use ofTesla vehicles.
There were 16 crashes in which the autopilot was turned on.
Those are just some of the crashes being investigated by the NHTSA. There were 273 crashes involving autopilot in the US between July 2021.
There is a possibility of a massive recall. The Model S, X, 3, and Y are included in the 830,000 cars that the NHTSA is looking into.
It's not clear what the recall will look like, or if it will be forced on the company to physically take possession of the vehicles to make changes.
The company is going through a reorganization. The news comes just two weeks after the abrupt departure of the head of the company's artificial intelligence department.
There are clear risks to using these driver-assistance features, particularly when it comes to the optional $12,000 add-on that is being tested by a group of drivers on public streets.
The crashes are starting to pile up, and so is the pressure on the company to make sure its driver assistance software doesn't lead to another death.
Another NHTSA investigation has been prompted by the death of a motorcyclist.
There is more on autopilot.
