Four months after hitting Chris Rock at the Oscars, Will Smith apologized to Rock, his wife Jada Pinkett- Smith, and his fans in a video on Friday.
Smith told Rock that his behavior was unacceptable and apologized to Rock's family members who were affected by the altercation.
Smith didn't apologize to Rock later in the evening when he won the Best actor award because he was foggy out by that point.
Smith denied that Pinkett- Smith told him to hit Rock, as many had speculated, saying he made the choice on his own.
He apologized to his family for bringing on the heat.
Smith apologized to his fellow nominees, including Questlove, who accepted an award immediately after the incident.
The Fresh Prince star is working to be remorseful without being ashamed of himself.
Smith doesn't think that was the right way to act in that moment.
Rock joked about Pinkett- Smith's bald head while presenting an award at the Oscars. Smith yelled at Rock to keep his wife's name out of his mouth. Smith won an award for his performance in King Richard, his first Oscar, even though he wasn't removed from the ceremony. Rock didn't press charges and hasn't addressed the incident in public. Since apologizing for the slap, Smith has stayed out of the public eye. He was not allowed to attend future awards ceremonies for the next 10 years because he resigned from the Academy. In June, Pinkett- Smith dedicated several episodes of Red Table Talk to the condition that causes hair loss.
Rock made a joke about the incident during his stand-up set. He said that anyone who says words hurt has never been hit in the face. I am not a victims. That hurts, motherf---ker. I went to work after shaking that off. I don't cut myself in the hospital.
