The Senate voted this week to approve the CHIPS Act, which subsidizes domestic chip production. clearing the Senate is a huge and important step towards the American chip fabrication industry getting a serious chunk of cash.

This may be happening for a number of reasons. Supply chain problems and chip shortages have been the bane of everyone's life, and onshoring some fabrication materials, tools, and know-how will go a long way towards making the U.S. less reliant on external manufacturing.

Let's be honest, chip manufacturing is expensive, but that's all good and well. I can't remember the last two chip factories that are being built, one in Germany and the other in the US. The subsidy builds two and a half plants if it costs that much. It doesn't turn the U.S. into a chip- Fab powerhouse overnight.

I am most excited about the chance of history repeating itself. The more recent news of a potential cash injection into the industry could set the stage for a startup boost.

Intel’s choice to build a $20 billion chip fabrication facility in Columbus, Ohio, along with the passage of the CHIPS Act, could set the stage for a startup ecosystem boost.
