Over the years, it has been in trouble with the US and Canada. The brand has continued to push forward despite its many battles with the powers that be.
The Axon 30 family of phones was a great success. We found the front camera quality of the Axon 30 to be better than that of the Z Fold 3.
The next generation of UDC technology is featured in the Axon 40 Ultra. The image quality of the hidden sensor has improved, and it's almost impossible to spot it.
I was expecting the Axon 40 Ultra to make a bigger impact than its predecessor did. It does. A lot of the features of the best phones are missing from this phone.

The sale of the Axon 40 Ultra and the Axon 40 Pro went live a month after the announcement. The phone is available in Canada and the U.S., but not in American Samoan, Guam, Hawaii, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Africa are also included.
You can buy the 8 gigabyte/128 gigabyte variant for $799 and the 12 gigabyte/ 256 gigabyte variant for $899. You get a region specific charger in the box when you buy the black version of the ZTE.
If I didn't mention the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra's gorgeous backside, I wouldn't have started this segment. The phone is very thin and has a smooth texture on the back. You've got yourself an S22 Ultra-esque feel, but more glamorous, if you combine that with the rectangular camerabump made of metal, and three vertically aligned camera lens.
It's clear that the display doesn't miss out on style and fashion. It's as good as invisible to the naked eye because of the under-display camera on the top.

It's a delight to look at. The Axon 40 Ultra has a 120Hz screen refresh rate. This phone is responsive and it shows.

The idea of snappiness was laid out by the idea of the nine-layer cooling system that was used by the company. MyOS 12 is supported by the Axon 40 Ultra.
Even though there's no Material You dynamic theming here, you still get to personalize the accent colors, icon shapes, fonts, Always-on display, and more.
All-day battery life is provided by the 5,000mAh battery in the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra. 45 minutes is how long it will take for the 65WUSB-C charging station to top it off. You also get a soft Silicone case, a C-to-C cable, and a pair of wired earphones in the box, as well as the free charging dock.
The stereo speakers of the device go so well with the huge battery that the device has. The result is spectacular audio production. The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is a great phone for media and gaming.
The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra doesn't pay attention to multitasking. The phone does not stutter. There's a useful accessibility tool called Z-POP buried into the OS, along with gestures like "Raise to wake" and "snooze/dismiss an alarm."
The third-gen UDC technology used in the AMOLED panel is one of the features that I love about the Axon 40 Ultra.
Last year, the company pulled off what it did. The 16MP front camera is a far cry from the blurry dumpster fire that we got the last time.
The sample shows that the color accuracy is off and the picture looks saturated. The selfies get a green card from me. I'm excited for the next generation of the under-display camera technology because of the UDC's improvement.
We need to focus on the main cameras. There was a lot of discussion about the rear camera setup when the Axon 40 Ultra was announced. I like the majority of the images taken by the main cameras.

The 91mm 64MP telephoto lens can be used under the right lighting. The colors look washed out and the range suffers, but the images are still clear at up to 3.5x zoom.
I wish more thought had gone into the triple camera setup of the phone. There is a detestable elephant in the room, despite the main cameras all working together.
The 16mm 64MP lens has skeletons in it. The macro photography feature works when you close in on the subject at a certain distance while approaching. Anything captured in the macro mode is garbage, and I found myself not liking it as much as the dull 16MP selfies.

The image is from the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra non-macro mode.
You might have the perfect shot in front of you, but the camera software jumps between takes. The Axon 40 Ultra's brains warped and it was last minute to switch to a different lens. To start from scratch, you have to adjust the angle. It's really hard.
The smart macro mode can be turned off. The cameras are not consistent and suffer in low light. The results of night mode are so blurry that you will not use it.

There is a sample of the Axon 40 Ultra night mode.
My other concerns about the Axon 40 Ultra have been there for a long time. That doesn't mean that they're not unreasonable wants. Do you know how many flagship phones have that feature? The Axon 40 Ultra isn't dustproof. It borrows the UDC from the book but can't waterproof it.
I almost forgot that the Axon 40 Ultra is not resistant to the forces of nature because it looks and feels like a premium phone. It's all the more important that all phones have some level of resistance to water.
This huge slab of glass and metal doesn't have wireless charging. I don't understand why wireless charging isn't included in the device. If budget phones like the Nothing Phone 1 can do it, so can top-of-the-line phones.
There is a small complaint about the included case. It looks like a disposable cup when you look at the soft Silicone case. It slipped off during my testing and made me wonder why it was included in the first place.
It's a niche product in an overcrowded market that doesn't see many big case makers flocking to it. The phone cover is not good.
This is going to be a frightening ride. We don't just have your run-of-the-mill flagships anymore, we have different segments to choose from. Budget flagships, mid-tier flagships, and insane beefed up flagships are all under the "Ultra" or "Pro Max" banners.
The S22 Ultra is the best upscale phone that you can get. You get an S Pen with the device. It's ridiculously expensive and you can often find deals from the company.
The Pixel 6 Pro is the best value flagship. The phone has some powerful on-device artificial intelligence features thanks to the chip.
The Red Magic 7S Pro and the ROG Phone 6 Pro are good for gaming. The Red Magic gaming phone has more robust internals and starts at a lower price.
If you do, you should purchase this.
If you buy this, you should not.
The Axon 40 Ultra is a good value, but it misses some features that make up a flagship. There isn't any kind of protection against water damage. The latter has become nearly essential even if you don't care about either one.
The cameras on the phone are decent, but they aren't consistent. The front camera is a work in progress and the macro mode is a disaster. It's not worth your time to look at low light photographs. Is the money well spent if I have to struggle to use my phone? The judge is you.
I've come to the conclusion that the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is a pretty gaming phone that is pretending to be a flagship phone. It has a powerful processor that does a great job. The phone has a cooling system to keep it cool.
