  • The long-range weapons system from the US is being used in the Ukrainian fight against Russia.

  • Ukrainians say they used it to kill a Russian general.

  • Russia's bad war planning is the perfect weapon to use, according to a military expert.

According to a military expert, the long-range weapons the US sent to Ukraine are the best weapon for this moment in the war because of how it can exploit Russia's poor war planning.

The US sent long-range, high-precision rocket systems to help fight Russia, as part of the arsenal Western countries are sending to help fight Russia.

More long-range weapons were needed by the Ukrainians. The Ukrainians say it's working.

Russian command more vulnerable

According to William Alberque, director of strategy, technology, and arms control at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the HIMARS is the right system for Ukraine because of how Russia is fighting.

Russia's infantry and armored units are vulnerable due to their dependence on their supply chain and lack of trust in lower-ranked officials to make decisions.

He said that because of their doctrine, they don't let decision-making go to the lowest level as we do in the West.

"You have to move your command post closer to the front, with Russia moving massive amounts of ammunition, gathering them all together, and moving their command posts closer and closer to the front," he said.

From a safe distance for its own soldiers, Ukraine now has the equipment to hit them quickly.

The Ukrainian government said that it was used to kill a Russian general.

Alberque said the HIMARS is very accurate and easy to set up. The thing is gone when Russians think about counter fire.

He noted that Ukraine is hitting these huge dumps of weapons.

The weapons have made a huge difference for the country.

There is an amazing coincidence of Russian tactics and a system designed to destroy them.

Russia's centralized command is believed to have left its generals vulnerable inUkraine.

Russia has no clear defense

Alberque said it's not clear how Russia could respond.

He said fixing its logistics wouldn't be possible for Russia. That is a five year job.

Russia may be able to better intercept the missiles by using existing equipment, but that could make it a bigger target.

He said that it would be better if that was successful.

Massing together good radars and good air defense systems is a great target for HIMARS.

Russia has a lot of long-range weapons, but they are not as accurate as what the West has. It is a long-term problem.

Hurting Russia

In June, the first HIMARS arrived in Ukranian.

Russian officials told a militia to destroy long-range weapons after Ukrainian officials praised it.

The audio it released was of a conversation between a Russian soldier and his wife in which he said he was going to be killed by the Ukrainians.

A senior US defense official said last week that there was a "thorn in the Russian side" that the Ukrainians were using to hit targets.

Not a silver bullet

The US will send four more in the coming weeks.

The US has not agreed to more than 12 more.

The weapon should not be celebrated as a game-changer.

According to Marina Miron, a research fellow at the King's College London Center for Military Ethics, Russia is looking for ways to destroy their enemies.

She noted that the systems need to be resupplied with missiles and soldiers trained to use them, making them vulnerable.

She said that other weapons that arrived in Ukraine were hailed as game-changing, but were not as relevant when Russia adapted.

In July, the US defense official said thatHIMARS isn't a silver bullet. From the beginning, we didn't think it was a silver bullet. We know that the HIMARS is having an impact.
