After revenue at Meta fell for the first time in its history, the company has reportedly told publishers it will no longer pay for content to run in the News Tab. It doesn't make sense to over- invest in areas that don't align with user preferences because most people don't come to Facebook for news.

The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and CNN were paid millions of dollars by Facebook. As it increased its investment in news, Facebook hired journalists to direct traffic to the news tab.

The Guardian and The Economist were promised to be paid by Facebook when it launched the News Tab in the UK. It signed a deal with Murdoch's News Corp after the Australian Parliament passed a law requiring them to do so.

Facebook has been criticized for taking ad dollars away from news websites. That has contributed to the failure of a quarter of US news sites over the last 15 years.
