According to research published in the British Medical Journal on Thursday, people with monkeypox are showing symptoms that aren't usually associated with the disease, meaning they could be missed by clinicians.
People who have been bitten by monkeypox are more likely to report rectal pain and penile swelling than people who haven't been bitten.
All but one of the 197 people with confirmed monkeypox infections were men and all of them had sex with men.
Most of the men were hospitalized for rectal pain or penile swelling.
Not typical symptoms of monkeypox were reported by 9 and 22 participants.
The researchers warned that the symptoms could be mistaken for other diseases and that they could help explain how the outbreak became so widespread.

The World Health Organization has declared a global public health emergency due to the rapid worldwide spread of the disease. Almost all of the countries that have not previously reported monkeypox have reported at least one confirmed case this year. The majority of these are in the US. The testing figures are likely to be much higher.
