A former police officer who was convicted on multiple counts related to participating in the Capitol riot said he was under stress, drinking too much, and in a "rabbit hole" of conspiracy theories.

Robertson was fired from his job as a police officer in Virginia after his arrest. He was found guilty by a jury of obstructing an official proceeding, entering and remaining in a restricted building, and carrying a dangerous weapon.

Robertson wanted to make the judge aware of things that may have contributed to his state of mind before and on January 6, 2021.

Robertson said he became the primary care giver for an older friend who had brain cancer months before the attack. As a result of caring for the older friend, I was exposed to a lot of pro Trump, anti Biden media.

Robertson said the stress he was experiencing caused him to drink more than he had before, and that "shameful" social media posts he made leading up to January 6 were "a product of stress, alcohol abuse, and submersion in deep "rabbit holes" of election conspiracy theory

He said he sat around at night drinking too much and reacting to articles on Facebook. The result was not indicative of who I am.

Robertson said that while he doesn't dispute his actions that day, he did not intend to disrupt Congress or use his walking stick as a weapon.

The lawyer for Robertson asked for a sentence of 15 months.

The President of the United States told Mr. Robertson that the election was stolen. The filing said that the President was bolstering that the election was stolen and that he believed it.
