As the Washington Nationals continue to field trade offers for Juan Soto, discussions with one team have gained steam.

The San Diego Padres are in serious talks with the Nationals about a possible trade for Soto, according to an MLB insider.

The Padres were thought to be the front-runner to acquire the two-time All-Star, according to a report. The deadline for trades in San Diego is 6 pm. There will be competition from other teams if the deal with Washington is not completed on August 2.

The New York Post reported earlier this week that at least a half-dozen teams have reached out to the Nationals about Soto, and the St. Louis Cards were seen as the favorites to land him. According to Heyman, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers are also involved in the chase.

Whoever completes a deal for Soto will pay a lot of money. According to Mark Feinsand of MLB Network, a deal for Soto is going to be the biggest package you've ever seen returned for a player. In order to build for the future, the Nationals are looking for more than one young prospect.

There are a lot of players that the Padres could offer in a trade. San Diego's top two prospects are Luis Campusano and Robert Hassell III.

The trade rumors have quieted the man at the plate. He's gone 3-for-21 in six games since returning from the All-Star break, with no homers and twoRBI. He will have the chance to correct himself in the opener.
