The third season of the DC animated series Harley Quinn is now streaming on HBO Max, and the show's creators sat down with the AV Club to talk about what fans can expect.
The series transitioned from DC Universe to the streamer. Schumacker said that Hbo Max saved the show. They loved what you guys were doing from the start of the third season. Don't fix things that aren't broken. They've been saying, 'Go, go harder.' We are all for it if you want to be edgier.
The Harley and Ivy romance has had some backlash from fans of the two characters who want them to get together again. Schumacker wrote off the chance. Some fans still think Harley and Ivy are not compatible. We're never going to do that. If we have a say, Harley and Ivy will stay together. We don't want to touch that again.
The plan was to center Harley's love story on her journey. Halpern said that they wanted to make sure that they told a story first. Harley is trying to figure out who she is. What kind of self-discovery is she going to make after this relationship? Would you want to have her jump back into another relationship right after that? The person is coming out of a bad relationship. Have you ever seen a person leave a bad relationship and immediately start a new one? It doesn't happen often. We decided to take our time with that.
Halpern admitted that they are two straight white dudes show running the series, and that they take the responsibility to be accountable for handling the story authentically with their team.
Schumacker said that they would credit the writer who was a writer on season two with telling them not to do a coming out story. She is the reason we didn't do that. I think that was our first thought.
Halpern said, "That is a perfect example of why when you populate a room with other voices who aren't afraid to tell you what you're about to do is stupid."
The full interview with the show runners can be found over at the club. The third season of HarleyQuinn is now available to watch.
