A "humanitarian crisis" caused by Republican-led busing programs in Texas and Arizona led to the request for the D.C. National Guard to be activated by the mayor.

The Secretary of the Army has been asked to use the National Guard to deal with the crisis.

Thousands of migrants have been bused into D.C. since April.

The two states have combined to send about 100 buses filled with migrants to D.C.'s Union Station, located just a few blocks from the Capitol.

The busing effort is politically motivated and we expect the number of people crossing the border to increase.

Key Background

The governors started offering free bus rides to migrants in response to the Biden Administration's plans to end Title 42, a Trump-era policy that quickly expelled most people arrested after crossing the U.S.- Mexico border. The courts have prevented the White House from ending the policy, but the busing continues as a protest against Biden's border policies. The city largely relied on non-governmental organizations to deal with the influx, which has led to increased criticism of her handling of the surge. New York City is causing problems for the migrants because they are traveling beyond D.C. Adams blames the D.C. busing for a shortage of homeless shelter space in the city. The White House doesn't like the busing programs.

Big Number

More than a thousand dollars. In some cases, the cost of first class plane tickets from border cities to D.C. is higher than the cost of buses to D.C., according to an investigation by KXAS-TV.

The White House calls the first migrant bus a publicity stunt.

The buses sent to D.C. are cruel.
