China Warns U.S.—Don’t ‘Play With Fire’ Over Taiwan—After Biden-Xi Call

The U.S. hasn't changed its stance on Taiwan, according to a report from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Chinese said the U.S. should not support Taiwan's independence because those who play with fire will die.

The Biden Administration has made clear it doesn't support Taiwan's independence, but a reported upcoming trip to Taiwan from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has caused further tension between the US and China.

The White House said Biden made it clear that the U.S. policy toward Taiwan has not changed.

The call began at 8:33 a.m. and ended at 10:50 a.m.

This is the fifth phone call Biden has had with the Chinese leader.

If Pelosi goes to Taiwan, the US may send fighter jets and other military equipment to the region to protect her. Many Republicans are in favor of Pelosi visiting Taiwan, and she has invited several of them to join her on the trip. Increased U.S.-China tensions can be traced back to China's cozying up to Russia after the invasion of Ukraine. The U.S. and Taiwan do not have diplomatic relations, but the State Department says they have a "robust unofficial relationship".

There are rising cases in the country if China goes for another round of Covid-19 lock downs. Tim Uy of Moody's Analytics told Forbes last week that China's Covid situation poses a risk for the global economy. On an earnings call last week, Musk said that the Chinese government's actions have caused supply-chain hell for the company.

The domestic troubles in China will hang over the Biden-Xi call.
