The first expansion pack of the Villainous board game franchise will feature Symbiote. The role of Venom, the anti-hero from the Spider-Man series, will be available for players to play in the game. You will need to play one of the previously-released titles if you want to enjoy this expansion. Ravensburger has released a single character, which means that they must be planning more. Chances are high that you will still get to play as your favorite if your favorite was missed in either of the bases. These pieces have always been very fun in the Villainous series and this one looks very cool. io9 spoke to Cassidy Werner, Head of Games, and Mike Mulvihill, Game Development Manager at Ravensburger to learn more about the expansion. The full interview can be found below. Linda Codega asked what part of Villainous was important to keep in mind when designing the Venom addition.
We have talked about creating a solo expansion for a while and realized that we needed to pick a villain that was really famous. That is the symbol of Venom. He has been appearing in comics for decades and his style and attitude meshes well with other cultures. He is one of the most-requested villains in our write-in poll, so we know players have been waiting for him to join the line-up.
Mike Mulvihill said that one of the most important parts to creating a villain is to keep him or her in their most villainous state. It was important to focus on Venom's evil side, not his anti-hero side. We focused on the Venom character from the earlier stories. Regardless of which part of the franchise they're from, focusing on the villains' most evil qualities is important for all Villainous characters.
What parts of Venom'sthos did you focus on?
The monster version of Venom was the focus. In a Villainous game, our villains usually work with allies to execute some of the elements, but in Venom's case, he is alone. We focused on the early part of his story because he hated Spider-Man and we wanted to include the Symbiotes. Fans can identify where he is in his story by using the Symbiotes.
How do you balance the new additions with the old ones?
When creating an expandalone game, we need to balance all of the characters to make sure the game is balanced. We wanted to make sure Venom could match up with any of the villains in the comic book series. We did a lot of testing to make sure we had the right balance. We wanted to make sure that the game mechanics allowed him to do what he needed to do in a reasonable amount of time.
What parts of this addition are you most looking forward to talking about?
You have to approach it from the perspective of a bad guy. It's better to play as Venom would. The objective that Mike came up with can be applied to other versions of Venom. Spider-Man needs to be defeated in order to win as Venom. This could be seen as a battle between Spider-Man and the symbiote.
The Venom mover is something we are excited about. I like it because it has the most teeth. The team went through many different versions of the design in order to get it right. One concept that balanced Venom's head on his tongue was among the original sketches. We went for a look that was quintessentially Venom and also cool enough for a single character expansion.
As fans, we know that Venom will eventually become a hero. We created a single Hero card for this expansion. We acknowledge to fans that we are referring to a very early storyline and that Venom eventually becomes a Hero. We have created a card that can be added to any fate deck, even if you are playing as Venom. It's possible to add it into a game. Venom becomes very active when this card is used.
The book will be on sale on Amazon in October and nationwide in November.
