The Los Angeles Lakers' starting five for the 2022-23 campaign is far from set, and it appears they have a certain style of player they want to start at the wing and guard spots.

According to league sources, the Lakers are looking to start whichever wing or guard can make threes and defend at the point of attack. In training camp and the preseason, the player that stands out will be the favorite.

In L.A.'s starting five, the only true givens are the two superstars. If he's traded, it's reasonable to think Russell will start.

The purple and gold are looking for a combo of perimeter shooting and defense. Buha reported in June that the Lakers were trying to sign two-way wings.

The Lakers are focused on two-way wings, according to league sources. Signing a wing or two who could come in and start next toLeBron James and Anthony Davis is the most likely scenario for their taxpayer midlevel exception.

L.A. had limited salary cap space this summer to make bigger moves to improve its three-point shooting and defense in free agency. It is said that the franchise is trying to move him because of his high salary.

Walker's three-point shooting went down last season despite the Lakers signing him. Brown has the potential to be a three-and-D player, but he has not shot as well from deep as he would have liked.

The only player on L.A.'s roster who has shot better than 36 percent over his career is Nunn.

The Lakers improved their three-point shooting through the NBA draft by selecting Michigan State's Max Christie, but he isn't playing much in the NBA.

The L.A. team had the ninth worst three-point percentage in the NBA. The defensive rating was the 10th worst in the league.

Many of the franchise's problems could be solved if it could get out from under the contract of its star player. It is more and more likely that the veteran point guard is still on the roster.

There could be a little competition for the remaining starting spots.
